Cape Town Flora - Fynbos - Ericas - Cape Point Reserve
The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of the world's six floral kingdoms and the most botanically rich habitat on earth.
"Fynbos" (Afrikaans for fine bush) is the local term used to describe the heath-like vegetation characteristic of the region, which include various species of Proteas and Ericas. While Proteas are of the few large-leaf plant types in the region, generally with large striking flowers, Ericas are generally smaller plants with many small, tubular flowers and needle-like leaves.
The diversity of fynbos plants is greater than that of the tropical rainforests, with over 9000 species of plants occurring in the region, most of which are endemic. This includes over 600 species of Ericas of which only 26 are found in the rest of the world.
